Following my arrival in NYC and having played a couple of games of squash with Vera - I was thrilled to meet Eddie and over time we three developed a fun, joyful and forever interesting relationship that I have cherished since its inception. I have loved and adored Eddie for 35 years and during that time we spent some amazing times together including travelling with friends to many parts of the world. What a joy it has forever been to be with and around Eddie – he is always upbeat, charming, funny and delightful. I have always been captivated by his story telling and by the depth of his knowledge on so many topics – from ancient history to poetry to the human anatomy. You can’t be in Eddie’s presence without learning something from each and every passionate conversation. And the best is always when Eddie rose to recite a poem --- staggering me with his ability to not only remember every word, but to also bring the piece to life. I will love this unique and wonderful man all my life and I think he loved me –-- particularly for the times that we collaborated on bringing one or two of his never-ending collection of artifacts into his home without Vera’s knowledge!!!! I love you Eddie - rest in peace.

Eddie was a wonderful friend and neighbor, and he and Vera were among the first to welcome us to the neighborhood in Yonkers. These photos confirm that Eddie loved to dance (from 2013) and enjoyed a good barbecue (2023)! He was also a great history enthusiast, and liked to attend lectures and classes in the subject at Columbia, including my own. We will miss him terribly, and are grateful to Vera for continuing to be such a good neighbor to us.

Dr Bourke was one of the best teachers and kindest human beings I have ever encountered. I have such vivid memories of him during my residency at Downstate. And yes, his animated teaching style was very impactful and a lot of fun. He was kind like no other. He always showed willingness to help residents get the best fellowship spots, career, personal or life advice. He was a fierce patient advocate. One story stayed in my mind forever. His most satisfying experience as a physician, he told us, was a small and non glorious maneuver that helped a little girl suffering of terminal cancer pass peacefully. That small detail says so much not only about how he viewed his calling of being a physician but also his humility, benevolence and ability to give as a human being. He will be very much missed. My deepest condolences to the family and everyone who knew and loved him. Rest in peace Dr Bourke!
