Dr Bourke was one of the best teachers and kindest human beings I have ever encountered. I have such vivid memories of him during my residency at Downstate. And yes, his animated teaching style was very impactful and a lot of fun. He was kind like no other. He always showed willingness to help residents get the best fellowship spots, career, personal or life advice. He was a fierce patient advocate. One story stayed in my mind forever. His most satisfying experience as a physician, he told us, was a small and non glorious maneuver that helped a little girl suffering of terminal cancer pass peacefully. That small detail says so much not only about how he viewed his calling of being a physician but also his humility, benevolence and ability to give as a human being.
He will be very much missed. My deepest condolences to the family and everyone who knew and loved him. Rest in peace Dr Bourke!
