Please share a memory of Laura to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Laura Schiavello VanNostrand, born September 17, 1955, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and lifelong resident of Yonkers, New York, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Her life was a remarkable example of strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication—a legacy that continues to inspire all who knew her.
Laura is survived by her devoted loving husband, John VanNostrand, with whom she shared a life of love, strength, and unwavering support for 30 years. Their bond was a constant source of comfort and companionship, built on shared adventures such as Sunday NASCAR races, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys in life. Laura especially loved traveling with John, creating unforgettable memories together near and far. She also found great joy in cooking for her family, filling her home with delicious meals, warmth, and the comforting scent of love. John stood by her side through all of life's joys and challenges, and their love was a beautiful example of partnership and devotion.
Laura was the beloved daughter of the late Janice and Anthony "Sonny" Schiavello, and the cherished sister of the late Toni-Ann Jewell. She is survived by her loving siblings: Barbara Donaldson, Donna O'leary, and Anthony Schiavello, with whom she shared unbreakable family bonds. She was a proud and loving mother to Michelle Allen and Gina DeMatteo, and to her late son Michael Cantelmo, whose memory she carried in her heart every day.
Her greatest joy in life was being "Nana" to her seven grandchildren: Tyler Allen, Madison Allen, and Krista Allen; Devin Marrero; and Christopher Jr., Nicholas, and Amelia DeMatteo. She was their rock, their safe place, and their greatest cheerleader. Her warmth and guidance will forever live on through them.
Laura dedicated her life to the Yonkers Public Schools, proudly serving as a Public Safety Officer for 22 years, most notably at PEARLS Hawthorne School. She brought pride and joy to the school community every single day. To the students, she was a source of comfort and happiness—the first smiling face they saw when walking through the doors. "Mrs. VanNostrand" was not just a staff member; she was a beloved figure, known and adored by all. Her presence made school feel like home, and her care and kindness left an indelible mark on generations of students and staff. After more than two decades of service, Laura retired with honor, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, protection, and love for her school family.
A wake will be held on Wednesday, May 7th, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Sinatra Funeral Home, Yonkers, NY. A ceremony will follow on Thursday, May 8th, 2025, at Mount Hope Cemetery at the Summit Mausoleum.
