Nicola "Nicky" Della Rocca, age 69, passed away on Wednesday, September 3rd, after a long battle with colon cancer. Born in Popoli, Italy, on July 7, 1956, to Elsa and Alfredo, Nicky moved to New York with his family at the age of four, settling in the Bronx.
Nicky passed peacefully at home, with his wife of 40 years, Robin, by his side. In his final days, he was surrounded by his loving family and an extended circle of friends, including his two daughters, Laura and Stephanie; son, Nicholas; sons-in-law, Frank and Alfredo; daughter-in-law, Michelle; and his grandchildren Elsa, Daniel, and Vincent. Nicky is also survived by his two brothers, Anthony "Tony" and John; sister-in-law, Michele; sister, Adriana; and brother-in-law, Nick.
Nicky spent most of his life working as an IT telecom professional, a career that allowed him to travel the world while balancing his dedication to his family. A lifelong athlete, he enjoyed playing football, hockey, tennis, and golf. Nicky found great joy in coaching his children's various sports teams, from basketball to baseball to flag football, often treating the family to ice cream after the games. As his children grew older, the entire family developed a deep love for sports, regularly attending games to cheer on their beloved New York teams, including the New York Mets, New York Islanders, and especially his New York Jets.
A season ticket holder for more than 30 years, Nicky could often be found proudly wearing green and white at MetLife Stadium—and everywhere else. If not cheering for the Jets, he was likely on the golf course with his son, with whom he shared a special bond over the sport. One of Nicky's lifetime goals was fulfilled just last year when he had the opportunity to play at the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links, with his wife, son, and daughter-in-law by his side.
A fiercely loyal man, Nicky's love for his family and friends was unwavering. His strength and dedication will be deeply missed.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 12th at Sinatra Memorial Home in Yonkers from 2:00–4:00 pm and 6:00–8:00 pm. His funeral will take place on Saturday, September 13th, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Yonkers at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation
