Heidi Joan Slater, affectionately known as “Tidy Heidi”, was born December 25, 1935, in Dobbs Ferry, New York and passed away peacefully at Regional Hospice in Danbury, Connecticut during the night of September 3, 2025. She was 89 years old.
As the third child of Bertie Ackermann and Max Meier, Heidi spent her childhood in Dobbs Ferry. She attended The Masters School for high school before attending Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts and earning a BA degree in Psychology.
After graduation, Heidi moved to New York City and worked in the finance industry. Through mutual friends, she met Maurice “Skip” Slater, and they later married in 1960.
Heidi and Skip lived in Old Greenwich, Connecticut and Barrington, Illinois before returning to the east coast to settle their family in Armonk, NY during 1969.
Heidi was a stay-at-home mom and raised her three children. During her free time, Heidi enjoyed being a life-long member of the “Niners” at The Whippoorwill Club. Heidi was also a member of the Armonk Methodist Church congregation. Heidi loved the arts; she was an avid painter in her early years and then traveled all over the Northeast discovering special pieces made by other artists. Heidi also had a passion for real estate which she combined with her artistic side to excel at house renovation and decoration. Heidi and her family enjoyed many special memories in the homes Heidi passionately created near Stratton Mountain, Vermont and on Candlewood Lake in New Milford, CT.
Heidi is survived by her son Paul, daughter-in-law Wendy and grandchildren Andrew (and Taylor), William and Emily of Cross River, NY; her son Peter, daughter-in-law Bianca and grandchildren Nina and Quinn of Cincinnati, OH; and her son Philip and daughter-in-law Rosana of Shelton, CT.
Heidi was a devoted wife to her late husband, a strongly protective mother to her three sons and an adoring grandmother to her five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in the fall with details to follow. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Heidi’s honor to Regional Hospice of Danbury, CT.
