Alexander Mezo passed away in the early hours of January 28th, on his 74th birthday, in Danbury, Connecticut. Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Alex was one of twelve siblings and grew up with very little—but never without stories, laughter, or love. The tales he told of those years often sounded like something out of The Little Rascals: a group of scrappy siblings getting into trouble, then figuring out how to get themselves back out again.
From a modest upbringing, Alex built a life defined by hard work, resilience, and humility. A self-made businessman, he worked his way up in every industry he touched, spending much of his adult life in auto salvage. Through perseverance and determination, he founded his own business. By any measure, he was a success—but he remained humble, generous, and deeply grounded.
Alex was known for his sharp wit, gentle nature, and physical strength. He had a gift for being there when people needed him—always ready with a joke, the right words, or a helping hand. He helped freely, never keeping score, and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Alex loved adventure—traveling, riding his motorcycle, fishing on the Esopus in upstate New York, and attending live theater. Guided by his mantra, “Do it for the memory,” he lived with curiosity, openness, and a sense of wonder, always choosing experiences, connection, and stories that would last. But what Alex loved most and was most devoted to were his children and family.
Alex is survived by his son, Matthew; his daughters, Julia (Sam) and Rachel (Conor); his beloved grandchildren, Liam, Owen, and Jillian; and his siblings, Dee, Carol, Fran, Julie, Ellie, Barbara, and Johnny. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Albert; his brothers, Junior and Teddy; and his sisters, Elizabeth and Ginny.
Alex’s life was marked by love, laughter, and adventure—by showing up for his family and friends and leaving behind a legacy of kindness and memories that will be treasured forever.
