Maria Imburgia, beloved wife, mother, Nonna, sister, Zia, and friend, passed away surrounded by her family at the age of 83. She was born on November 23, 1942, in Sicily to Maria and Giuseppe Ciminello, where her story of devotion, resilience, and family-first love and loyalty began.
In March of 1972, at just 29 years old, Maria bravely immigrated to the United States from her hometown of CampoFelice di Roccella, Sicily, alongside her husband Pietro and their young children. Carrying nothing but hopes, dreams, and an unshakable belief that America would offer a brighter future for her family, Maria built a life rooted in sacrifice, hard work, and unconditional love.
Upon arriving in America, they settled into the Bronx where Maria worked as a dressmaker, showcasing her skill and attention to detail. Yet her greatest calling, one she embraced with unmatched pride, was being a homemaker and extraordinary cook. Her kitchen was the heart of her home. Through her food, she brought people together for decades, filling tables with abundance and love. No matter the size of the space, she always found room for one more chair, one more plate, one more person. Feeding others was her love language, and no one ever left her table hungry.
Family was Maria's greatest pride and joy. She was a devoted mother to her children: Salvatore (Elise), Giuseppe (Carmelina), and Giovanna (Marcello). But it was in her role as Nonna that her heart truly overflowed. She dedicated her life to raising and nurturing her grandchildren Maria (John), Cristina (Christopher), Eliza (Nicholas), Pietro, Maria, Salvatore, Giuliana, Antonio, and Marcello. Instilling in them the importance of family, tradition, faith, and unconditional love. She was overjoyed to become a Nonnina to her three beautiful great-grandchildren, Alessia, Carmine, and Vincenzo, who brought her immense happiness.
Maria was the cherished sister of Rosina Pugliese and Salvatore Ciminello, and she was predeceased by her beloved brother Francesco Ciminello. She was also proudly known as "Zia Maria" to many nieces and nephews and leaves behind numerous cousins, sisters-in-laws, and brothers-in-laws who will forever treasure her warmth and presence.
Outside of caring for her family and working her magic in the kitchen, Maria found joy in gardening, watching her novellas, traveling with her family, and indulging in her secret guilty pleasure, White Castle burgers. She loved music, singing, and dancing, and those who knew her best know how deeply she missed dancing with the love of her life, Pietro. Her love story began when she was just 12 years old, and now, we find comfort in knowing they are reunited, arms around each other once again dancing together in heaven.
Maria Imburgia's legacy lives on through the generations she shaped, the traditions she preserved, and the love she gave so freely. She was a warrior until the very end, beating all odds and surviving battles most couldn't. She will be missed beyond words and remembered forever in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
