Domenica "Mamie" Giordano Obituary
Domenica (Mamie) Giordano, a lifelong resident of Yonkers, died on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, at Sprain Brook Manor home after a long illness. She was 93.
The middle daughter of the late Grace and Anthony Vulpone, she was named Domenica (which means Sunday in Italian) but always went by the nickname Mamie, which she preferred. A graduate of Commerce High School, she worked from her teen years until she was almost 80, starting as a secretary for an insurance firm and other small businesses in Yonkers, including the Union Pencil Company. She was a sales associate at Caldor's on Central Avenue in Yonkers for many years in the home goods department – a job that she loved – and later worked for the Yonkers Public Library System at the Will Library on Central Avenue and occasionally in the Crestwood Branch, processing books and other materials. She also helped run her husband's appliance repair business. Throughout, she was a devoted homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Vincent James Giordano, in 2011, and her beloved baby brother, Joseph Vulpone, in 2020. She is survived by her sisters, Grace Prunella and Antoinette Barbarita, and many nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law, Pat Vulpone; her daughter, Mary Ann Giordano Wallis and her husband Robert Wallis; her son, Vincent James Giordano Jr. and his wife, Deborah Giordano; six grandchildren and their spouses: Dr. Kate Wallis (Dan DeGuisto), Samuel Wallis (Alyssandra Jaquith), Dr. John Wallis (Jessica Stabile), Matthew Giordano, Lindsay Giordano Reynolds (Christopher Reynolds) and Christopher Giordano; and five great-grandchildren: Ava and Adelina DeGuisto, Eleanor Wallis, and Olive and Brooks Reynolds.
The family's gratitude goes to the many gentle people who helped Mamie during her long journey with dementia, but especially to her devoted caregiver and relentless advocate, Paula Canavan, and her loving dog companion, Bella. Thank you also to the staff of Sprain Brook Manor.
The wake, funeral and interment will all be on Wednesday, May 6, starting at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Yonkers Partners in Education, at YPIE.org, which supports Yonkers high school students and helps them prepare for, get into and succeed in high school, college and careers.
