Obituary of Vincent M. Saladino

Please share a memory of Vincent to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Vincent M. Saladino, 91, passed away on January 14th, 2024. He was born in Manhattan to Vincent and Theresa Saladino, and raised in the Bronx. As a young man he enjoyed playing football, and working the food concessions at Yankee Stadium and Orchard Beach. Vincent was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 and served overseas in the Korean War as a military police officer for two years. His life of service continued in 1955 when he was appointed as a firefighter in the New York City Fire Department. He spent 34 years working in Midtown Manhattan at Engine Company 8. He loved his job so much that he often said "I never worked a day in my life," and that being a firefighter was "the best job in the world."

He married the love of his life, Harriet, on November 29th, 1958 at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Yonkers, NY. Vincent was an incredibly devoted husband. He cherished every moment of the 59 years he spent with his wife until her passing in 2018. Together they raised four children, Vincent (Lulu) Saladino, Jeanne (Michael) Gallagher, Christopher (Regina) Saladino, and Denise (John) Viviano. Vincent was an incredible father and his family was the cornerstone of his life. He was the proud and beloved grandfather of John, Stephanie, and Michael Viviano, Ryan and Kathryn Gallagher, and, Samantha and Christopher Saladino. In 1989, Vincent retired from the FDNY to start his new fulltime job as a grandfather. There were many things in life that brought him joy, but nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren. He always said they kept him young at heart.

Vincent was an avid WWII historian, and enjoyed reading historical war novels, loved riding his bicycle, eating pancakes, watching the Yankees, and taking daily walks around the neighborhood. He was a selfless and kind person who dedicated his life to being the best father, grandfather and all around just incredible person. Words can't describe how much he will be missed.

Vincent was predeceased by his brothers; Joseph, Benedict, Dennis, and Ronald.
