Helen Agnes Brazil, a long-time resident of Hastings-on-Hudson, died at her residence in Peterborough, New Hampshire on November 18. She was 86 years old.
Born in the Bronx on January 20, 1926, Helen graduated from Cathedral High School for Girls in 1944. She worked at the Diocesan Services Corporation as a secretary. Helen married John (Big Jack) Brazil on January 20, 1951 at St. Peter and St. Paul Church in the Bronx. They moved to Hastings-on-Hudson soonafter.
Helen was involved in numerous activities at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, including the Rosary Society, the Mother's Club, and teaching CCD. Helen worked as a secretary for Square D, and retired in the 1990's. She later moved to Newburgh, NY with her son Michael, and later moved to New Hampshire to be close to her daughter and her family. In Peterborough, Helen was very involved in activities at her assisted living residence and her parish.
Helen is survived by her sons Michael of Newburgh, NY, and Timothy, of Oakland, CA; her daughter, Margaret Kelly, of Peterborough, NH; her son-in-law, Tom Kelly and granddaughters Mary Kate Kelly and Eileen Kelly, all of Peterborough, NH; and a daughter-in-law, Ana Brazil, of Oakland, CA. She was predeceased by her husband John, her son Jack, her daughter-in-law Dorothy Brazil, and her younger brothers Carl and Joe Sack, also of Hastings-on-Hudson.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday November 23 at Hastings Funeral Home in Hastings-on-Hudson. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday November 24 at St. Matthew's Church in Hastings-on-Hudson. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
