Lander, Jean Ellen Holmes
Age 77; Born: December 25, 1935; Died: February 12, 2013
Jean Holmes Lander died peacefully at Northern Westchester Hospital, in Mount Kisco, New York, on February 12, 2013. She was the widow of Richard N. Lander late of Armonk, New York. She is survived by her sons David R. Lander (Tracey Thompson Lander) and Jonathan H. Lander (Beth Myers Lander), and her three grandchildren, Rebecca Jane Lander, Andrew Richard Lander and S. Radigan Lander. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Case. Jean had survived her father, George B. Holmes, her mother, Elinor Holmes and three siblings, Pearl Maranaccio, Robert Holmes and June Chory.
Jean was a woman of great accomplishments. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Hunter College in New York City, and before having children, she worked as a hospital dietician and in research for General Foods. After her children were born, she devoted her attention to family, managing a household, supporting her husband's political and professional careers and raising two sons and, in that process, becoming "den mother to the world".
Jean was devoted to lifelong learning which she willingly shared with all who asked. She was the "permanent substitute teacher" at the Crittenden Middle School in Armonk, New York. She could teach any subject to any age group, but focused her attention on grades six through eight. When she wasn't in the classroom, Jean devoted her considerable teaching skill to tutoring. Many a young scholar was run through their academic exercises at her dining room table.
Jean was a person of great faith and was a pillar of the Armonk United Methodist Church. It is safe to say that at one point or another she has done everything a lay person can do in the church (often holding many offices at the same time), from directing the Christmas pageant and running the famous Election Day clam chowder luncheon (including knowing the secret recipe) to serving as Chairperson of the Administrative Board and later Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. Her love of the Church was not limited to Armonk's United Methodist Church, as Jean also served as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Middle Patent Methodist Episcopal Church, an historic church preserved in time.
