Mildred H. Wago (nee Hogan), a resident of Armonk, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and loved ones on August 25, 2013. Mildred (affectionately known as Millie), lived a fulfilled and active life for 95 years. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles L. Wago, (Charlie). Mildred was the daughter of Gunhild Olsen Hogan and Andrew Hogan. Her sister, Gladys Evans, predeceased her. She was a loving and devoted mother to her two daughters, Linda (Richard) Herbst, and Charlene (Bill) Decker. She was a loving grandmother to Kim Leary, Tiffany and Christie Herbst, and Billy, Samantha, and Kevin Decker. Mildred also was the proud great-grandmother to Matt and Jack Leary. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Born in the Bronx, Mildred moved to White Plains when she was 10 years old and graduated from White Plains High School. She attended business school in White Plains and worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in New York City for 13 years. In 1949, after marrying Charlie, Mildred moved to Armonk. She worked for the Town of North Castle as Deputy Receiver of Taxes in 1960. In 1970 she was elected Receiver of Taxes, a position she was re-elected to serve eight 4-year terms, retiring in 2001 at the age of 83. Mildred served as regional vice president of the New York State Receivers of Taxes and as president of the Westchester County Receivers of Taxes. She was also a member and past-president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1097, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department. She was a life member of the North Castle Historical Society. As a result of Mildred's service to the North Castle community, she was awarded in 2008 the Pat Bresha Award for Distinguished Community Service, sponsored by the Armonk Lions Club. Former Mayor of White Plains, Joseph Delfino, declared Friday, April 5, 2002, as Mildred H. Wago Day in the City of White Plains. Friends may call at the Oekler-Cox and Sinatra Funeral Home, 262 Main Street, Mt. Kisco, NY on Tuesday, September 3, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Armonk United Methodist Church in Armonk, NY, on Wednesday, September 4, at 11 a.m. Interment Middle Patent Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Westchester and Putnam, 540 White Plains Road, Suite 300, Tarrytown, NY 10591.
