Mary Pojer (nee Petruska) 86, peacefully passed away on October 13, 2014 at St. John's Hospital, with her family by her side. Mary was predeceased by her parents, John and Susan Petruska of Yonkers, New York. She was the beloved wife of deceased former Yonkers Police Captain, George Pojer, loving mother to Robert, an IT manager at Krasdale Foods in White Plains and Susan Pojer, social studies teacher at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua. Mary also was the much-loved mother-in-law of Patti Pojer, former special education teacher and student advocate and loving devoted grandmother (La- La) of Katie Pojer, Pursuing an MSW in Social Work, all from Pleasantville.
Mary graduated from Sacred Heart High School at the end of World War II and worked for Catholic Charities, the YMCA, and the Hudson River Museum. Mary was co-owner of the family bakery (Pojer Bakery located on Walnut Street, Yonkers) along with her husband, in-laws and sister-in-law, Evelyn Zarychta (nee) Pojer.
She was a devoted parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, respected and loved by everyone who came into contact with her.
Mary always volunteered in church activities, crocheted thousands of pieces, baby blankets, hats, scarves and afgans for sale in the Maryknoll Gift Shop located in Garrison, New York. Mary happily donated to various charities throughout her lifetime. She enjoyed singing and dancing in her day and was ever so happy to describe those "happy days."
Mary, a loyal thoughtful mother, grandmother, and friend, always did whatever she could to help "others." Mary will be sorely missed by those that love her. Her favorite phrase when asked how she was doing was "hanging in there," and she did just that for her family, until the very end. Rest in Peace our sweet Mary! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to " Doctors Without Borders " in an attempt to aid the Ebola Crisis www.doctorswithoutborders.org Mary truly showed commitment to alleviating the suffering of those less fortunate.
Friends may call at the Sinatra Memorial Home, 601 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers, NY, on Thursday, October 16, from 5-9 PM. Funeral Mass will be held Friday at Most Holy Trinity, 18 Trinity Plaza, Yonkers, NY at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. To offer words of comfort, please visit www.sinatraffh.com.
