Obituary of Gemma Merante Macri

Gemma Merante Macri, age 84, passed away peacefully into the arms of Our Lord on May 14, 2015 at 4:14 pm surrounded by her loving family. Gemma was born on April 4, 1931 in Gimigliano, Catanzaro, Italy. She was the daughter of the late Domenico and Maria Merante. As a child, Gemma worked hard and helped care for her siblings after her father passed away when all children were a young age. In 1966, at the age of 36, Gemma married and came to America where she continued her work ethic. She proudly became a citizen of the United States in 1974. Gemma loved to cook and take care of her family. She was loved by many and will be missed by many. Gemma is survived by her husband Fortunato Macri of Yonkers, her daughter, Maria Merante and her granddaughter, Erica Salas, whom she taught her strong Italian ways and loved so very much. She is also survived by her brothers, Ralph Merante of Miami, Florida, Luigi Merante of Rome, Italy and Benito Merante of Milan, Italy. She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Merante. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday at 10am at the Church of Saint Eugene. Entombment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY. Friends may call at the Sinatra Memorial Home, 601 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers, NY on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
