Margarita G. Fonfrias, 92, passed away peacefully at home, January 17, 2016 with family members by her side. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 29, 1923, to Narciso and Juana (Velez) Gonzales, she came to New York in the 1940's with her loving husband, Jose Rafaél, who predeceased her in 1972. Margarita loved to sing duets with him, dance, cook memorable meals for family and many friends who visited the Fonfrias' home. She travelled extensively with her adored older sister, Rosa. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. Predeceased by son, Julius, she is survived by three beloved children, Jose Rafaél Jr. (Beth), Juan B. (Nora), and Rosélis, four cherished grandchildren Richard (Norka), Lisa (Alex), Nicole (Joseph), and Andrew Jose. She also leaves behind eight great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Two sisters Eulalia and Rosa and a brother, William, predeceased her. After many years of civil service, Margarita retired in 1988 from the New York State Department of Agriculture with offices in the World Trade Towers as a dedicated and loyal bilingual secretary, and where she was known for her kindness and generosity.
Friends may call on Wednesday, January 20 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Hastings Funeral Home, 15 Spring Street, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 21 at 10:00 AM at St. Matthews Church, Warburton Avenue, Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. Internment will follow at Mount Hope cemetery
