Obituary of Elizabeth Spokony

Elizabeth P. Spokony, longtime resident of Yonkers, NY, died on February 11, 2016. She was 94 years old. Elizabeth was born in Manhattan to James and Elizabeth Daskalos (nee Smiddy) and had two sisters who predeceased her. She attended Textile High School and graduated in 1939. After high school, Elizabeth attended the Delehanty Institute to continue her secretarial studies. She worked as a secretary for the Continental Casualty Co. and later for the Excess Underwriters Co. until 1948. Elizabeth married her high school sweetheart, Hilton O. Spokony at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in New York City in June 1947, and they had three children, Michael, Marion and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a faithful parishioner of St. John's Roman Catholic Church since her family moved to Yonkers in 1968. Elizabeth's beauty shone from the outside and from within. Her love of her family was ever-present. She was the quiet strength behind her husband, a devoted mother to their three children, and a loving grandmother to her grandchildren. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Hilton, in 2012. She is survived by her son, Michael Spokony and his wife Janet, her daughter, Marion LaFranco and her husband Wayne, and her daughter Elizabeth Lazarou. She was also blessed with four grandchildren, Timothy Spokony, James Spokony (who predeceased her), Carl LaFranco, and Elizabeth Spokony. A wake will be held at Sinatra Memorial Home, 601 Yonkers Avenue, Yonkers, NY, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2016. The funeral service will take place at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 670 Yonkers Avenue, Yonkers, NY, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16th. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Avenue, Hawthorne, NY.
