We simply called him “Coach”. He was the gym teacher at my first teaching gig, Scholastic Academy/School 18, and an absolute character. We were a true family there at that time, and he was the fiery, hilarious uncle. Always a fixture at our happy hours, laughing along with you and your latest teacher stories, always buying you a drink before you realized it had even happened. At school, when he wasn’t busy running out the door collecting quarters at his laundromat during his lunch hour, he’d be flying around the building in his Sergio Tacchini tracksuits, hooking you up with coffee, tea, or some ice cold sodas that he had tucked away in the mini-fridge of his gym office (greatly appreciated when working on the top floor of a 100-year-old building on a stifling hot June day). He looked out for the young teachers, sticking up for us whenever he felt like we were being taking advantage of. My most vivid memory of Coach, though, was the morning he came to my classroom door to tell me about the events of September 11th as they were unfolding. We had limited access to the outside world then, and his checking-in was vital. He truly cared, knowing that we had family members who worked in Manhattan. Rest In Peace, Coach. Gone far too soon

Dear Lucille and family,
Our thoughts are with you always. What a wonderful person, Tony was. He will always be remembered. He will always be "Coach" to my children. He will be playing ball with David now. God bless you all. We love you.

Our School 18/Scholastic Academy family is heartbroken to hear of the loss of our Tony. He was one of a kind...a friend to all, a listening ear, always ready to help. He was a caring and devoted teacher who understood the kids better than they knew themselves and he always encouraged them to do their best and to go the extra mile. They had a friend in “Coach”. We all did. He touched thousands of lives and made them better because he gave his time. He will never be forgotten.

To the Speranza Family: I was a classmate of Anthony's way back in PS 21 and then at Lincoln HS. In addition to school, we played baseball and football together on the fields of Tibbetts Brook Park and I always considered him to be a great friend, intense competitor and a very kind person with a wonderful sense of humor. I share your loss....
I talked with Anthony at the last LHS 1970 Class reunion (not sure when that was) and he was very proud to tell me he had made a career in Physical Education out of his passion for athletics. God bless him and may he play baseball forever....
