Obituary of Rita Gawron

Rita Bohack Gawron (July 28, 1919 - June 22, 2018) A lifelong resident of Yonkers, Rita died on June 22, 2018 at the age of 98. She lived in Rye and Port Chester the last eleven years of her life. She is predeceased by her husband Cass Gawron, her parents Joseph and Lillian (Andrejco) Bohack and her brother Vincent Bohack. She is survived by her children Lorraine and Robert Gawron and nieces and nephews. She graduated from Most Holy Trinity Elementary School and Commerce High School. After high school until 1949, she was employed at St John's Hospital, Traveler's Insurance, Eastern Aircraft, and Pyridium Pharmaceutical Co. On September 11, 1947, Rita married Cass J. Gawron. When her children were young, Rita was an active parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Yonkers. She was a member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She worked with the school nurse for many years, as well as volunteering in a variety of church and school functions. In her later years, Rita was a member of the Yonkers Senior Splashers, the American Red Cross and a volunteer senior swimming instructor at the Sprain Ridge pool. She also volunteered her time at the Blessed Sacrament Monastery in Yonkers. When Rita was in a nursing home in her late eighties, she was President of the Residents' Council and would lend a helping hand to other residents. Rita enjoyed doing for others and loved being with people. There was a creative side to Rita too. It gave her pleasure to cook and bake for her family. She also did beautiful crewel embroidery. Rita's generous and determined spirit, and captivating personality, will be missed by all who knew her. Her family will receive friends on Monday, June 25th, 2018 at the Sinatra Memorial Home at 499 Yonkers Avenue from 2 pm – 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on June 26th, 2018 at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 602 McLean Avenue, Yonkers, followed by interment at St. Mary's Cemetery at 114 Sprain Ridge Road in Yonkers.
