Obituary of James Sheppard
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James Lee Sheppard was born, June 17, 1923 in North Hampton County, Exmore, Virginia. He was
son of the late Ruben Lee Sheppard and Ethel Bailey. God sent His angels to the Yonkers Garden Nursing
Home (formerly St. Joseph's Nursing Home), Sunday, January 13, 2019 to guide him home.
James arrived in New York at the age of 12 and joined Unity Baptist Tabernacle Church. He attended
elementary school at Nathan Hale and Washington Junior High School in Mt. Vernon, NY. When he turned 16, he helped his dad sell fresh fish from a mobile truck full time. Many other services were made available door to door; like ice, milk, eggs, etc. in those days. He had a comedic nature and practiced many crafty projects; like making belts from soda tabs and yarn. As a patient, he created his own job by folding bibs at the nursing home, and would pass them out to the patients at mealtime. He said he felt useful helping the patients.
He worked in a bakery in New York City for a short time. He became an Auto Detailer for Byrn Brother's Chevrolet in Valhalla, NY., while living on Walsh Road, Yonkers, NY. When Byrn Brother's Chevrolet relocated to Florida, he worked for Brunschwig Fils a high-end upholstery company. He met and married Louise Jones in 1943. They raised 2 daughters, Shirley and Elouise (Ellie).
