Obituary of Albert J Lombardo

Please share a memory of Albert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Albert J. Lombardo, 47 of Yonkers, NY, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 29, 2019. Albert’s story starts in Yonkers, NY on March 2, 1972, son of the late Joseph Lombardo, and Geraldine Lombardo (Giordano). Albert grew up with two sisters, JoAnn and Karla. He didn’t have any biological brothers, but his brother-in-laws Danny and Pat have known him since he was a child, and Albert always looked to them as brothers. Albert always wanted to help others and wanted to be a police officer like his father. He joined the Mount Vernon Police Department and retired out of the Rye Police Department less than a year ago. Albert’s career was about more than just being an officer, he was what you would call a “community cop.” He was always interested in helping people everyday. Everyone he came in contact with respected and loved him. True story: when he and his then girlfriend and soon to be wife were at the county fair one year he told her there was a guy he had recently arrested; she felt stressed and worried that this person would take revenge. The gentleman came up to Albert, yelling “officer” and gave him a big hug and actually thanked him. The gentleman praised Albert, and told her “you got one of the good guys.” Albert later explained that you have to do your job, but you can still treat people with respect and dignity. And that’s how he lived his life, helping the best way he could, to anyone and everyone he met. In helping others, Albert always put everyone else before himself. Everyone that knew him felt lucky to have him in their lives. The world lost a great man and heaven gained an angel. He made everyone laugh with his goofy tendencies, always using the same tone of voice to poke fun at people. He was an animal lover, rescuing many dogs and bringing them to his home, training them, and finding them a good forever home. He once brought a stray dog home, keeping the dog in the kitchen until the owner called. The dog ate a large pot of chicken soup that was left on the stove. His wife was so frustrated at Albert, and at how he could have just let him eat the soup. Albert calmly said it must have been hungry, and that they could just make more.  Albert married Shannon Carello and had a son, Joseph A. Lombardo (after his late father). Albert was an amazing father for 2 short years he had with him. Albert also had a Furbaby, Butkus, and English Mastiff that he took everywhere and loved dearly. Albert was overjoyed to hear he was having a boy, and was looking forward to teaching him everything he knew – how to live an honest life, being able to be self-sufficient, fixing virtually anything, going to a casino and rolling some dice, and enjoying a scotch and cigar. However, he always laughed because he was not into sports and needed some assistance teaching baby Joseph the difference between a football and baseball. Albert is survived by his mother, Geraldine Lombardo, JoAnn and Danny Scambia (sister), Franco and Nicholas Scambia (nephews), Karla and Pat Capasso (sister), Geriann and Julianna (nieces), Samuel and Janice Carello (as Albert called them, the “outlaws”), Samuel Carello, Jr (brother-in-law), Samuel Albert Carello (nephew), Shannon Carello (wife), Joseph Lombardo (son), and Butkus Lombardo (Furbaby). Services will be held at the SinatraMemorial Home, located on Yonkers Avenue, Yonkers on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 2-8pm. The funeral mass will be Monday, June 3rd, 2019 at St. John’s Church, Yonkers, Avenue, Yonkers at 10:45am.

In lieu of flowers (which Albert always thought cost too much anyway), we ask that you make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
