STEPHEN JOSEPH KUBASEK JR. passed away Sunday morning, June 9th, 2019 at the age of 75.
Stephen was born in Yonkers, NY on December 29th, 1943 to Stephen J Kubasek, Sr. and Marion Grace. In 1984, Steve married the love of his life, Joanne Christie, and shared their love for over 35 years. Steve is survived by his wife and their three children and spouses; GraceAnn, Stephen Bartholomew and wife Carly, Emily and husband Paul DiNome. Steve is also survived by his 4 grandchildren Tyler 15, Anthony Joseph 10, Reagan 4, and Stephen Nicholas 18 months; 10 nieces and nephews, and 12 great nieces and nephews. Steve is the eldest of three children leaving behind his brother Jack Kubasek and wife Charlene, and his sister Marion Aiello. He will also be dearly missed by his right-hand man, brother-in-law, John Christie.
Steve graduated Most Holy Trinity Elementary, Yonkers High School, and St. Procopius College (now known as Illinois Benedictine) with a B.A. in Political Science. In 1962 Steve achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 45. He served Troop 45 as Scoutmaster for many years, and later Troop 4 as Committee Chairman. He was presented the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service in the Boy Scouts. Steve was a Republican District leader for 44 years and a Ward Leader for 15 years. He was an active member, parishioner, and volunteer for Most Holy Trinity Church his entire life and became the volunteer facility manager of the Parish Hall in 1997. After Most Holy Trinity closed, Steve became a parishioner at St. Anthony’s Church. Steve was active in numerous associations including the Slovak Catholic Sokol, First Catholic Slovak Union, a fourth degree Knight of La Rabida Knights of Columbus Council #166, as well as President of the Jednota Branch #41.
Steve was employed by the County of Westchester for 19 years as a Superintendent of Tibbetts Brook Park, Saxon Woods Park, and Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. From 1974 to 1985 Steve represented the people of Yonkers as a City Councilman, serving three years as Republican Majority Leader. Steve retired in February 2005 from the Greenburgh Water Department where he worked for 16 years. Steve was a man of many interests and abilities with an unwavering conscience and a strong determination to follow through with dedication and passion.
Steve was diagnosed with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer in August 2018. While maintaining his sense of humor, Steve fought courageously to stay with his loved ones. He demonstrated immense will power, strength, and faith throughout his battle with cancer. Stephen J. Kubasek, Jr. was a kind-hearted, caring, loving and honorable man who will be deeply missed by many.
Visitation will take place at Community Home for Funerals, 601 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers NY 10704 on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, from 2PM TO 9PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at the former Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 10AM. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
