OBITUARY FOR CARMELLA "CONNIE" COLOMBO
Born on May 27, 1920 in the Bronx to Dominick and Catherine (Amoroso) Colombo. A resident of Yonkers for almost 65 years, Connie was called home on Easter Sunday to celebrate the Resurrection in Heaven, just a few weeks short of her 100th birthday. Connie is survived by her brother Joseph, sister Rose, three nieces, Carole Chapyak, Mary Pernicone (Carl), and Jackie Rowland (William), and two great nieces, Christina and Caroline Rowland. Connie was predeceased by her parents and four siblings - Mary, Frank, and Antoinette Colombo and Catherine Chapyak (John).
After graduating with honors from Evander Childs High School in 1937, but not having an opportunity to attend college, Connie worked for F.W. Woolworth & Co. in Mount Vernon during the war years, and was assigned many different tasks, including modeling hair accessories and working in the Hardware department. In the 1950s she worked in Manhattan for her uncle's business, R. Conte Casket Company Inc., leaving to care for her mother until her death in 1964. Thereafter, Connie was employed for over 20 years as a bookkeeper in the City of Mount Vernon Water Dept., retiring in 1987.
Connie was a devout Catholic and proud American. For several years, she was active in the 12th Ward Republican Club. Connie loved her parish, St. Ann's RC Church, country, family and home. A wonderful cook, baker and gardener, she hosted many parties and barbecues through the years. In 2010, Connie celebrated her 90th birthday with a big bash at Leewood Golf Club in Eastchester, NY.
The family gratefully acknowledges the special care, attention and compassion extended to Connie by her longtime friends and caregivers, Norma and Usha. After a hospitalization last summer, additional care was provided by Jackie and Angela. In her final days, Calvary Hospital Care at Home nurses, Carmel, Bernadette, Joslyn and Kevin, offered compassionate and dignified care. We thank all of her caregivers through the years from the bottom of our hearts.
Due to the COVID-19 virus, a Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date. Sinatra Memorial Home, 499 Yonkers Ave., is handling all arrangements with private interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to Calvary Hospital - Calvary-at-Home: calvaryhospital.org/ways-to-give/
