Obituary of Jean Elizabeth Mason
Please share a memory of Jean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our beloved Jean E. Mason, born Jeanne Elizabeth Ruth, daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, niece, cousin, friend and best friend to many and truly a gift from God was born July 6, 1936 to Crombia Ruth, Sr. and Edna Johnson-Ruth in Sloane Hospital in New York City. Her family later relocated to Yonkers, NY when she was 8 years old. She was called home to glory after a long battle with illness.
Jean attended the Yonkers school system where she graduated from Commerce High School, worked in retail before becoming a well-known fixture in Yonkers once she began working as a social worker for the Westchester County Department of Social Services where she came across individuals and families in need and saw to it that their needs were met. She was known as a no non-sense woman who had a heart of gold and would give her last to someone in need. She was affectionately known as "Generous Jean."
Loyalty to family and friends was very important to Jean. She was the epitome of a "strong woman" who knew what it was to face challenges while working and raising four (4) children into adulthood who were all raised with a strong sense of family. If you knew Jean, then you knew how much she respected friendship and loyalty.
Jean's legacy is her love of family and friends and her selfless acts of kindness towards others will always be remembered.
Jean is now able to join her son, Michael Steven Mason, parents, Crombia and Edna Ruth, twin sister, Joan Ruth, maternal and paternal grandparents and a host of other family members including uncles, aunts, cousins and nephews.
Jean lovingly leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughters, Donna Mason of Alexandria, VA., Michelle Mason, Bronx, N.Y., Robin Mason of Lithonia, GA.,: grandchildren, Kiwanna, Dewan (Kelly), Tre'von, Re'Quanna, Re'Vaughna, Javanna, Brandi, Makalia; great grandchildren: Je'da, Makala, Tre'von, Jr., Mykel, Titan and Keilani and siblings, Guy Ruth of Colombia, Md., Crombia (Junior) Ruth of SC, Lucille Taylor of CT., best friend, Martha Lacy and caregiver of 6 years, Hawa Kargbo and a host of other family members and friends including cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
