Obituary of June Buckley

June Doris Moffatt Buckley, a longtime Yonkers resident, died peacefully in her sleep during the morning of Saturday January gth 2010. She was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on June 26th 1919. The family moved to Yonkers when June was eight years old. She attended PS 14, graduated from Roosevelt High School and graduated in Chemistry from the University of Rochester, where she was the first woman to earn a degree in Chemistry. She worked in Fleischmann Laboratories as a Chemist. In 1944 she married William Buckley, also of Yonkers. She continued to work as a Chemist until the birth of her first child. She became an instructor in Chemistry at Bronx Community College in New York City, and advanced to the position of Full Professor there before retiring in 1989. She and William were longtime summer residents at Hen Island in Rye, New York. They also spent many happy days in the Catskill Mountains at Jewett, New York. She was widowed in 1989. She began traveling to distant places including China and New Zealand before finding companionship again at the age of 80 with her partner Luco Abbaticchio. She has enjoyed a wonderful life with her three sons, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
