Obituary of Charles E. Crawford Sr.

In Loving Memory of Charles E. Crawford, Sr. December 13, 1936 - April 29, 2022 Charles Edward Crawford, Sr. "Charlie", passed away peacefully on April 29, 2022, at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY. He was 85 years old. Charles was born in Yonkers on December 13,1936, the third of five children to the late Joseph and Dorothy Crawford. He attended Yonkers Public Schools, and in 1955 enlisted in the United States Navy to proudly serve his country. Following an honorable discharge from the military, Charles began his career with the Yonkers Police Department where he earned many commendations and was promoted to detective in 1973. Charles served the community he was born and raised in with distinction until his retirement in 1983. Charlie stood at least 6'4" and was a gentle giant with a beautiful smile. He loved basketball, reading, playing Gin Rummy or Chess with the guys, watching westerns, eating out, and socializing. He fully lived and enjoyed his life. His words towards the end were gently stated "I had a good run" and "I'm ready for the long sleep." While we mourn the loss of Charles E. Crawford, Sr., we also celebrate a life well lived. He was preceded in death by his first and second wives Elaine (Thomas) Crawford and Barbara A. (Dawkins) Crawford; his parents Joseph M. Crawford Sr. and Dorothy M. (West) Crawford; siblings James "Jimmy" Crawford and Delores "Lovey" (Crawford) Oliver. Charlie leaves to cherish his memories nine loving children Carletta (Craword) Eaton, Kathleen Crawford, Charles E. Crawford, Jr., Neal Crawford, Anita Crawford-Alston, Steven Crawford, Ericka (Crawford) Bess, Dayna Priest, Bryan Priest; Donald Salmon, stepson; and two siblings Joseph M. Crawford, Jr. and Joan "Sissy" (Crawford) Williams. Charles is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws, and a host of other relatives. His presence will be missed by many family friends as well.
