Obituary of Mary D Zimmerman

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Our much-loved Aunt, Mary Zimmerman, 91, of Bedford Hills, New York, passed away peacefully at her home on September 13, 2022. She bravely confronted a terminal heart condition for many months and was in the care of Hospice of Westchester/Putnam. She was born April 3, 1931 in Manhattan, New York, and lived in the Bronx for over fifty years. She moved to Bedford Hills after the passing of her mother (Catherine Herlihy) whom she cared for, in Lincolndale, New York, until her mother’s death in 1999. Mary resided in Bedford Hills at Fellowship Hall for 23 years. During her life, Mary worked in many occupations, including office management and was an entrepreneur who opened her own clothing boutique in the Bronx. Mary always loved sports and children, which suited her well during her 10-year tenure with the Harrison School District as their high school equipment supervisor, assistant track & field coach and assistant varsity softball coach.  She was an avid fan of the NY Giants and the NY Yankees, rarely missing a game on TV and perhaps making a few friendly wagers with her brothers and nephews on the side!  She enjoyed traveling with her great-nephews’ and great-nieces’ baseball, basketball and lacrosse teams making her presence known by loudly instructing their coaches and the referees/umpires in all aspects of the game.  She was a staple on the sidelines, always wearing one of her many signature baseball caps and was well-known by all the players and parents alike.

Mary travelled to Jupiter, Florida each winter for many years to retreat from the cold New York weather.  She adored the Florida beaches and the beaches at Ocean Grove, New Jersey where she made many memories with her loved ones, both when she was younger and again when she introduced another generation to Ocean Grove.  She was also fond of her visits to Bolton Landing, Lake George where she enjoyed taking walks through town and to The Sagamore.  While in Bolton Landing she would often visit her childhood friend and family and enjoyed her time on the lake while swimming, boating and being with her friends and family.

Mary loved her apartment at Fellowship Hall in Bedford Hills where she counted all as her friends.  Always the life of the party, Mary was known to hold a discrete card game and share a few beers with her neighbors.

Mary is survived by nephew, Darren Quinn (Jo-Ann); nephew, Kevin Quinn (Dawn); nephew Daniel Quinn; niece, Tracey Zimmerman (Miguel); nephew, Brian Zimmerman (Christina); sister-in-law, Helen Zimmerman (James, deceased); great-nephew, Darren Quinn, Jr.; great-nephew, Ryan Quinn; great-niece, Kerriann Quinn; great-niece, Casey Quinn; great-niece, Lindsey Quinn; great-nephew, Christian Zimmerman; great-niece, Ava Zimmerman; great-nephew, Ronan Quinn; great-niece, Cate Quinn; and great-great-nephew, Michael Luszcynski. She is predeceased by her mother, Catherine Herlihy Colligan; her stepfather, James Colligan; and her brothers, James Zimmerman, Raymond Zimmerman, Daniel Zimmerman and Thomas Quinn.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2022, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 55 Valley Road, Katonah, NY, at 11:00 am, followed by a burial at St. Raymond Cemetery, East 177th Street and Lafayette Avenue, Bronx, NY, at 1:00pm. At the request of Mary, no wake will be held, but in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Hospice of Westchester/Putnam: https://www.hospicecarenetwork.org/donate-now/.
