Obituary of Elizabeth A. Fernandes
Please share a memory of Elizabeth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Elizabeth passed away peacefully with her family and friends by her side. She is survived by her mother Maria Fernandes, father John( deceased 2001), Sisters, Alice (Ron) Salvatore, Mary (Stanley) Michunovich, Marguerite (Mark) Cotte. Many nieces and nephews and as well as great nieces
We will miss her laughter, her rocking and dancing. Most of all we will miss her gentle and calm personality. She taught us, that in innocence we have learned there lies love. Her angelic personality made everyone smile. She loved her school, music, travelling with her group and especially going shopping and getting her nails done.
At age 5, Elizabeth entered the Willowbrook State School (Institution for Children with Intellectual
disabilities) located in Staten Island. In 1972 Heraldo Rivera exposed the conditions there. In 1975, Elizabeth and other children were removed and placed in community residences. A judge ruled that because of the inhumane, experimental procedures, abuse, overcrowding and neglect, these children were awarded lifetime care and protection. SHE WAS A SURVIVOR !!!
Beth's longtime home, Stoney House, was her home with wonderful peers and other residents as well as her Managers, Willowbrook coordinators and care givers. And her family will be forever grateful for their care and concern. They were always watching her back with great love and admiration.
