Francesco (Frank) Anthony Fortuna a life-long resident of "Park Hill" (7th Ward) in Yonkers, NY passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 16, 2023, of natural causes. He was 98 years old.
Frank was born on October 17, 1924, in Stigliano, Italy to Giulia Barisano and Nicola Fortuna. He was one of 5 children, all predeceased. Frank arrived in New York with his family at the age of 4 and quickly took up residence in Yonkers. He was a graduate of P.S. 18, Benjamin Franklin Junior School, and the High School of Commerce.
Immediately following high school graduation, Frank reported to the U.S. Navy where he proudly served as Coxswain until December of 1945. He served on the USS LST 264 and on June 6, 1944, delivered British troops onto Gold beach, on the first wave in Normandy, France.
After being discharged in 1945, Frank studied under the GI Bill and became a heavy-duty mechanic and equipment operator. He is a retired member of the Teamsters Union, Local 456.
Frank is predeceased by his wife, Annette Malacarne. They were married for 67 years and were at times inseparable. They enjoyed entertaining and socializing with friends and family, traveling, and going to Atlantic City together frequently. Watching the NY Yankees was one of their favorite pastimes at home.
Frank is survived by his daughter Julia Bonura, son Frank Jr. and his wife (Maureen Whitney), and three grandsons and their wives, Joseph Bonura (Jennifer), Michael Bonura (Aimee), James Bonura (Jessica), and five great grandchildren, Mikey, Jax, Jimmy, Jonny, and Julia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Frank was a member of the RK Phillips Club, AMVETS Post (aka Rauso Post), the Sons of Italy, Anthony Maggracomo Lodge #2320, the American Legion, and the Nodine Hill Senior Community Center.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, Frank will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Just a quiet, all-around great guy.
A true hero, and a distinguished member of "The Greatest Generation".
