Obituary of Helen Fischer

Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Helen Fischer was born February 13th, 1937 to Lewis Sahaida and Helen Preska, who immigrated here from the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe. They came here looking for a better life and found it in Yonkers, New York. Helen attended Commerce High School where she developed exceptional secretarial skills which she used as controller at Adzam Auto Sales for twenty-five years. She leaves behind a husband, Bodo H. Fischer, three children, and numerous grandchildren. Helen is remembered by her children, Patty, David, and Renee, as a powerful matriarch whose ability to navigate life's toughest battles with a laugh and a shrug taught them to do the same. Through good times and bad, she was busy either cooking and cleaning, buying and selling properties with her husband, or making thousands of pounds of her famous rugelach cookies, most of which she gave away for free. Her grandchildren remember her for the many trips to the pool, the movies, and to her favorite restaurant, Olive Garden. They remember her back massages, and the rapt attention she showed listening to them speak over tea and boardgames. They remember how her face lit up with joy when she saw them, and how she continued to laugh until the very end. Helen spent her final weeks in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by family, and passed away peacefully holding her daughters' hands. In lieu of gifts, she asked that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to Saint Jude's Hospital.
