It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Evelyn P. McHenry, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who departed this life on August 20, 2024, at the age of 86. Evelyn was born on September 7, 1937, in North Carolina, where she spent her early years before moving to New York.

Evelyn grew up in Durham alongside her dear cousin, Evelyne, with whom she shared a special bond. The two were inseparable throughout their childhood, speaking to each other every day and supporting one another through life's ups and downs. This close connection remained a cherished part of Evelyn's life.

Evelyn settled in New York, where she became a devoted wife to Milton McHenry. Together, they nurtured a loving family, raising three remarkable children: Elgin McHenry, Milton McHenry, and Tonia McHenry. Her surviving sister Ernestine and brother and sister that passed before her Lena Lewis Judy Pratt and Alexander McNair. Evelyn also left behind grand kids in Chantel McHenry, Pamela McHenry, Traycee McHenry, Schuyler McHenry, Vanessa McHenry, Laverne McHenry, Tory McHenry, and 10 great grand kids. Also a special thank you to her niece Brittany Rivers. Evelyn took great pride in her role as a mother and grandmother, always ensuring her family felt loved and supported.

A dedicated educator, Evelyn worked in a local school, where she touched the lives of countless children. Her passion for helping others extended beyond the classroom; she was an active member of the Yonkers Christian Assembly, where she served for many years. Evelyn was particularly known for her compassionate spirit and her commitment to leading communion services at the church, an experience that brought her immense joy and fulfillment.

Evelyn's warmth and kindness will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering faith.

In celebration of Evelyn's life, a memorial service will be held at the Yonkers Christian Assembly, where family and friends are invited to share their memories and honor her remarkable journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Yonkers Christian Assembly in Evelyn's memory, to continue her work in helping others.

Evelyn P. McHenry may have left this earthly realm, but her spirit and the love she shared will forever remain in our hearts.
