Hazel L Spencer, "Haze/Nanny", passed away on November 13th, 2024, at the age of 78 after a long and fulfilling life.
Hazel was born in Greenville, KY on August 22nd, 1946, to Hayes U. Shelton and Flora Bard Shelton. Later in her life she moved to New York and spent the rest of her time in Mount Kisco. Here she worked in many different professions, but her last and favorite one that she did for many years, was a private aide.
Hazel is survived by daughters Natalie J. Spencer and Sandra J. Spencer; grandchildren Isaiah W. Figueroa, Akilah A. Figueroa, Aleah Y. Figueroa, Anisia A. Figueroa; great grandchild Terrence J. Patrick-Jenkins; brothers Lawrence Shelton (Jaunita), Walter R. Shelton, Hayes L. Shelton (Barbara); sister Lauretta Shelton Allen (Charles); and several nieces, nephews, cousins and others she has adopted into the family.
She was preceded in death by her Father Hayes Shelton and Mother Flora Shelton; brothers Wallace Shelton, Ernest Shelton, Herman Shelton, David Shelton; and sister Thelma Shelton Leggs.
Hazel will be missed by the many ways she demonstrated her love to all who knew her. She lived her life filled with tremendous passion and service towards others and God.
Despite her feistiness, she was a prayer warrior for the family, the community, many churches as well as part of several prayer lines. She stood by the word of God and encouraged all to study the word and to build a relationship with him.
She was a dedicated and hardworking individual who always put the needs of others ahead of her own. In work and to all who knew her she valued giving and helping people with whatever she had.
One of Hazel's most known admired skills was her cooking. She loved to cook and share her dishes. A few of her dishes she specialized in was lasagna, banana pudding, peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, banana nut bread and that good old southern cooking.
Hazel was a family woman who loved spending time with her grandchildren, family, and fellowship with the household of faith. She passed down morals, principles, love, and the word. As we grapple with loss of her physical presence, we find solace in knowing that she lives on through all these things and that it's instilled in us.
