Obituary of Juan Aponte
Please share a memory of Juan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Juan Aponte passed away peacefully on August 23, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico on June 28, 1917. He was married to Herminia Torres in 1937, with whom he had five children (one child predeceased him).
Juan moved to New York in the early 50’s. He then remarried in 1952 after meeting Carmen Rodriguez and they had three children. The two enjoyed many years together until her death in 1990.
The most important things to Juan were family, faith, and hard work. He was employed for many years as a custodian, ultimately retiring from the Yonkers Public School System in 1979. While he spent most of his adult life in New York, he always held a special place in his heart for his beloved island of Puerto Rico, where he and Carmen enjoyed their retirement.
He took great pride in watching his children grow up, succeed in life, and start families of their own. He will be remembered for his quick wit, passion for dominoes, teaching life lessons, and his loyalty to the New York Mets.
Juan is survived by seven children, Juan Antonio, Mariana, Christina Gonzalez, Edith Sanchez, James, Richard, and Lillian Caferra, eighteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Juan’s memory to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
