Obituary of Maurice F. Slater

Please share a memory of Maurice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Maurice Frederick Slater, affectionally known as "Skip," was born July 1, 1933 in Syracuse, NY and passed away peacefully at his Armonk, NY home on the morning of January 20, 2019. He was 85. As the first child of Hazel Rieben and Maurice Slater, Skip spent his childhood in Norwich, NY before attending Syracuse University and earning a B.S. in Accounting. In 1955, Skip enlisted in the United States Navy's Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. He served until the late 1950's as a Bombardier/Navigator in the Pacific Fleet. Skip continued with the United States Naval Reserves and began working as a stock broker for Winslow, Cohu & Stetson, an investment banking firm. While in NYC, he met Heidi Meier, and they later married in 1960. Skip then was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant (LTJG) in 1963. Skip's professional career ultimately led him to a sales position at the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. After steadily advancing to Regional Head of Sales, Skip decided to venture out on his own. In 1974, he formed Slater Money Processing, a company based in Floral Park, NY, which held the regional franchise for Brandt Money Processing Equipment. Self-employed, Skip led the business successfully for over 25 years before retiring. After having moved from White Plains, NY to Barrington, IL, Skip and Heidi returned to Westchester County and settled their young family in Armonk, NY during 1969. A long-time member of the Whippoorwill Club and the Armonk United Methodist Church, Skip enthusiastically pursued golf and was an active member of the church congregation. Skip was dedicated to his sons' Boy Scout activities and also freely shared his love of the NY Yankees with them. Later in life, he became a real "old-timer" by attending games at Yankee Stadium with his grandsons. Skip also enjoyed special times with family at vacation residences near Stratton Mountain in Jamaica, VT and on Candlewood Lake in New Milford, CT. Skip is survived by his wife Heidi of Armonk; his sister Maxine Bretnall of Greenville, NC; his son Paul, daughter-in-law Wendy and grandchildren Andrew, William and Emily of Cross River, NY; his son Peter, daughter-in-law Bianca and grandchild Nina of Cincinnati, OH; and his son Philip and daughter-in-law Rosana of Shelton, CT. Described as "an old fashioned gentleman" by many who knew him, Skip was a devoted family man and a loyal friend. A memorial service to celebrate Skip's life will be held in the spring with details to follow. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Skip's honor to the American Heart Association.
