I am so sorry for your loss. I served with Jim as a docent at the New York Botanical Garden for many years and knew him as a fine man who was unfailingly kind and willing to share his knowledge. He will be very much missed by those of us at the Garden who knew him. Johanna DeCourcy

When I first moved to NYC I had a terrible time dealing with parking my clunky old jeep. Jim, who was a great friend of my father, offered to let me keep my jeep at his house for years, even though it leaked oil in his very clean garage. Every time I came to pick it up, he and I went out for beer and dinner. Jim was a truly generous person who made time for other people. He will be sorely missed.

Jim and I first connected at Stepinac in senior year when I transferred in from Iona. Jim immediately made me feel welcome. We enjoyed senior year together, but then college saw us go in separate directions. In not so many years, we re-discovered each other and found that we shared the same jealous mistress - the law. During my frequent visits to Surrogate's Court we would compare notes on our families and on our '58 classmates. With Art Malesardi, we often tailgated at Albany prior to watching Dan play football for the Great Danes. More recently, I drove Jim to our 60th class reunion in Rye, which was a great evening. I hope he enjoyed my company as much as I enjoyed his. I will miss him, but he will always be with me. Bill Lonergan '58

Jim and I were classmates at Stepinac High School and the University of Notre Dame. We shared excellent education and youthful adventures. It was clear the kind of person Jim would become later in life, serious, thoughtful, concerned about and love of nature.
In 1995 we reconnected for two causes: A scholarship for B.T. Collins at Stepinac and mutual concern for nature. At our 50th high school reunion, Jim was the one with the best fishing stories and reports on conditions of local rivers and streams.
We will miss him.

One memory of my dad: My brother, Pat, and I were at a MLB game with our dad, sitting in the bleachers. We were probably at an elementary school age. During batting practice, he all of a sudden says, “here comes one”. He catches the HR with his bare hands. He later explained how pain is diminished with beer :-).
