Luci, Luci… it took a while to gather my thoughts.
You’ve left me speechless this time. Now, we both know that’s quite a challenge for the two of us!
Our endless chats have a grave sound now. Yet, I can still and always will hear that laughter.
You meant the world to me and to so many people who have been lucky enough to be loved by you, to be touched by your contagious joy of life, energy, courage and generosity.
You believed in me when I did not.
You gave me confidence and strength when I felt lost. You have been my safe port when I was in rough waters. The warm motherly hug that I was missing. “You’re one of my children. We are your family”, that’s what you used to tell me. And you made sure I remembered that every and each time we spoke on the phone. There was no physical distance, no ocean between us that could challenge your reaching out for my heart and filling it up with comfort, joy and warmth.
A lioness who would do anything to protect her children and family. No room for sadness but only for the bright side of life. Even when things would get really dark you were the one to light the spark and show us the way.
A brave and compassionate heart that never quivered. Grand and larger than life.
The ocean is there now and it might look deep, cold and dark but I have our endless chats and morning coffees on the terrace in Manhattan; our lunches and cab rides across the island, to get me the best fish & chips or crab cakes in town; our evenings on the sofa with Pip, watching telly and talking about politics, waiting for the family to gather for our loud and happy dinners in between shows or after the theatre.
I even managed to get you drunk on a Piña Colada once! you and that contagious laughter no one could resist.
Well, the ocean might still be dark but I look up and there’s a star today shining brighter than all the others to lead me the way.
It won’t be easy but I promise you, I will always hear that laughter and it will be loud!
