I remember Karen as an outstanding intern during our training at the New England Deaconess in Boston; it was a pleasure to be her resident, and even then she showed her ability to connect with older and complex patients. It was so good, soon after I came to this VA 22 years ago, to recognize her as a fellow physician here! Her care for the veterans, commitment to teaching, & fund of knowledge were unparalleled. She was and will always be a true role model to those of us
privileged to work beside her.

Before the pandemic, Karen and I taught clinical skills to a small group of medical students at GW, meeting roughly every month for their first two years of medical school. Her knowledge, enthusiasm, and interest in the students' lives inspired them, and me, to share her vision of medicine as a deeply caring profession. I am so sad to hear she is gone. As we say in my tradition, "May her memory be for a blessing."

In loving memory of an amazing colleague. Dr. Blackstone, you were an inspiration. Your memories will always remain fresh in my heart. If it was my decision to make, I would have loved you to live longer, but God's ways are not our ways. We love you but God loves you more. We will miss you around here. May God grant your gentle soul eternal rest in his kingdom and grant your loved ones the fortitude to bear this great loss. Rest on till we meet to part no more.
Sister Philomena Bassey.

The death of a beloved doctor, mentor and colleague impacted me in many ways but the time we spent together working with out Veterans impacted me the most. I will forever cherish all the things you taught me, your good hear and the love you show towards everyone who comes in contact with you. You wanted the good for everyone both colleagues and patient. You will be greatly missed and will keep the memories in my heart. I will love and cherish all these memories.

Q: What will you never forget about Karen Ann?
A: I will never forget when I first met Karen and her family at my sisters home. I was 15 at the time and she was around 8. She was very friendly kid who grew up to be very bright and caring young woman and I’ll always admire her for that.

In 2016, we hosted Michael’s classmates to celebrate Michael’s and my grandson, Tyler Singleton’s birthdays. We had a pool party and had pizza for the kids. Karen offered to bring the family’s birthday tradition of donuts instead of cake, which was a huge hit. I had the privilege of getting to know Karen through sports and school events. She was the kindest, most caring and loving person. I am so very sorry for your loss and pray that you will be comforted through the love, prayers, and support of all who loved Karen.
