It was with deep sadness that I received the news of our aunt's passing. Following the vascular
stroke episode, I immediately recognized the challenges she would face in recovery, considering her
already high quality of life. As I processed the news, I shifted my focus to acknowledging the
emotions in different ways and directing my mindset towards cherishing the wonderful moments we
shared in her company.
During my childhood, it was a regular occurrence for our family to gather with our uncles for Sunday
lunches. I fondly recall playing with Luis in a field near her house, and she would gently remind us
not to stray too far as lunch was nearly ready. Even after she moved to the United States, she made
an effort to visit Portugal almost every year. On these visits, she and my mom would frequent
Chiado and Sintra for lunches, and I often joined them on those memorable occasions.
I had the privilege of spending time with her twice in the past year, once in Covões and another time
in my home where we shared a heartfelt dinner. These moments brought immense joy, and I am
grateful to carry the warmth of those experiences in my heart.
Despite the profound sense of loss, I choose to remember her with kindness and happiness, always
treasuring the strong sense of family that we all held dear. These cherished memories, from
childhood to recent gatherings, will forever be etched in my mind, and she will always hold a special
place in my heart as a beloved aunt.
